Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
